Union Gospel Mission
Since 1962 the Union Gospel Mission has provided food, clothing, shelter and a life-changing Gospel message to the homeless of Sacramento. Founded by a group of concerned Christian men with a staff of two, the Union Gospel Mission has grown to include 16 full-time employees who serve more than 6,000 meals monthly to hungry men, women and children. Every night, they offer more than 80 men a warm, safe place to sleep. Each year, they distribute more than 28,000 items of clothing.
The second Saturday of each month we purchase, prepare and serve a hot burrito dinner at the homeless shelter. We meet at DKC at 6:30 and head over together. There is always room for anyone to help!!
Good Samaritan Ministries of San Jose, CA (Pastor Sam Lee)
Good Samaritan Kids (GSK) has received district approval to cautiously develop a faith-based partnership with George M. Shirakawa Elementary and Middle School. We have communicated to the district and to the school that we believe that the ultimate solution to their problems rest in Christ. GSK's involvement in the school is as follows:
- Serving the school in their identified needs. In this case, the school has communicated that they would like an art program, music instruction and computer instruction, as a start. We call this Good Samaritan Evangelism – evangelizing the lost by simply serving them, on their terms. Currently we have launched a $10,000 art mural project, after school guitar classes and computer classes. These programs are offered free of charge with the declared motive that "we serve the school because Christ served us first." The art program has been so enthusiastically received that we are now working with students during school hours, 3 days a week. The school has also given GSK an office at the school, rent free. This is a public school.
- In return for our services, the district will release the school for a Bible Club on Fridays and evaluate releasing the school for a Children's Church on Saturdays. I have been working with Youth For Christ in setting up the Bible Club. We hope to launch the Bible Club in February. Child Evangelism Fellowship has been training a GSK volunteer to help launch the Children's Church. The target date will be sometime later this school year, with the program stabilizing in the following school year, 2005-2006.
- Youth: Good Samaritan Youth
GSM has developed relationships with 3 high schools in the downtown area that are open to the same ministry platform being developed with the GSK program. We have placed a faith-based conflict mediator at the largest high school in the area, ministering to 4,000 high school students.
Step-Off Ministries – Buena Park, CA (Pastor Sam Thomsic)
Step-Off Ministry first began in 1998, where God gave us a vision to reach Korean gangsters for Christ; prayers were given and plans were made. Step Off had its opening service two months later. From the beginning, God's plans have been bigger than any of our resources or abilities. He has literally given us a heart to reach gangsters in every city across America. We are talking about hundreds of thousands of souls. The enormity and specificity of the task demand that we throw tradition and caution to the wind and lean totally on God to fulfill this vision. We will use any legitimate means to bring someone to our church so that they can hear the Gospel; this includes motor sports, music, video games, break-dancing and pool. Already, God has blessed our faithfulness to His vision. We have the opportunity to see gangsters come to Christ on a weekly basis. Young people, who had been incarcerated, used and dealt drugs and terrorized others are being touched by God's grace through this ministry.
